World Without End, By Ken Follett

World Without End, By Ken FollettIf you enjoyed reading Pillars of the Earth, you will want to delve into his new book World Without End. Don’t be put off by the length of 1013 pages since some of you might not want it to end!

People have asked if Pillars of the Earth must be read first. I would say no, since the characters are a new generation. However, since the residents continue to deal with the cathedral, his first book gives you a perspective on the importance and complications involved with the construction.

I did wish that Ken had included a family tree however, since it can be somewhat confusing until you have digested several chapters to follow the characters. A “cheat sheet” is recommended if you can only read a few chapters a night.

So what makes this book a winner? The character development paints a descriptive picture so you can truly connect with each person. Also, you gain a perspective on medieval life that is incredibly rich in detail. You experience how difficult their lives were and can commiserate with them. The plague engulfs towns and the consequences of losing so many people are brought to light. The struggle between church and state still exists, but you watch changes occur in the balance of power.

I highly recommend this book. Just start it when you have plenty of time in case you don’t want to put it down.
